The MGF and MG TF were mid-engined, RWD sports roadsters sold under the MG marque between 1995 and 2011. After the MG RV8's limited production run as a relaunch of the highly successful and iconic MG B, the MGF was the Rover's Group (then owned by BMW) bet to compete in the small sports roadster market against the Mazda MX5 and the Lotus Elan. Initially featuring a 1.8L, 120 hp engine, the MG F saw great success thanks to its great ride and handling characteristics. It received a face-lift in 1999 as well as several new engine options, and in 2002 received a new name after the iconic convertible from the 50's: the MG TF, which was produced until 2005, when the Rover Group was acquired by the Nanjing company. Under new ownership, the company decided to continue production in China from 2007 until 2011.
