The BMW 7 Series is a range of full size luxury sedans produced by BMW starting for the 1978 model year. The 7 Series is BMW&#39;s flagship model, and is exclusively available as a 4 door sedan. The first generation of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/">BMW 7 Series</a>, known as the E23, was introduced for the 1978 model year. The genesis of what would become one of BMW&#39;s most well known cars, the E23 began the 7 Series&#39; tradition of innovation. The E23 featured many firsts for the company such as anti-lock brakes, a warning light panel, and an on-board computer. E23 cars were offered with a variety of inline 6 engines. Variants for the E23 included the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/728i/">728i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/733i/">733i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/735i/">735i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/l7/">L7</a>, and the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/745i/">745i</a>. The 745i was a performance focused variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/">E23 BMW 7 Series</a> that was introduced for 1980. Exclusive to the European market, the rear wheel drive 745i initially featured a turbocharged 3.2L version of BMW&#39;s M30 inline six engine (A South African market 745i was also built, but it featured a naturally aspirated 3.5L inline six), but in 1982, BMW introduced their M106 engine, and began fitting it to the 745i. This 3.4L turbocharged engine generated the same 249hp and 280 lb ft of torque as the original engine, but its power was delivered at lower RPMs. Both engines were only available with automatic transmissions, although the original engine was paired to a 3 speed, while the M106 was paired to a 4 speed automatic. Production of the 745i ended in 1986, when the model series was put on hiatus until 2002, when it would appear again as part of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e65/">E65 BMW 7 Series</a>.

The BMW 733i was a variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/">E23 7 Series</a> that debuted for the 1978 model year. The 733i was one of three variants offered by BMW for sales in North America (Alongside the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/735i/">735i</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/l7/">L7</a>). Although the name of the 733i implies a 3.3L powerplant, these sedans were powered by BMW&#39;s 3.2L M30B32 inline sixengine, which was paired to manual and automatic transmission options sending drive to the rear wheels. BMW introduced the 735i variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/">E23 7 Series</a> for the 1980 model year. The 735i was powered by BMW&#39;s M30B35 inline six engine. This 3.5L unit generated 208hp which was sent to the rear wheels via manual and automatic transmission options. The E23&#39;s top of the line North American variant, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/l7/">L7</a>, was built using the 735i as its basis. Production of the E23 735i ended in 1986, but the model series continued life as part of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e32/">E32 BMW 7 Series</a>.

BMW L7 - E23

Introduced for the 1980 model year, the L7 was a US-market specific variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e23/">E23 BMW 7 Series</a>. The L7 was the top and most luxurious offering for the E23 7 Series, sharing its drivetrain and chassis with the 735i. This series of cars featured generous use of leather throughout the cabin, as well as a moonroof and various standard options. Power for the L7 came from BMW&#39;s 3.4L M90 inline six engine, that generated 215hp driving the rear wheels through a four speed automatic transmission. The L7 was the last variant of the E23 7 Series to be produced, with sales ending in 1987. BMW would reintroduce the L7 name as part of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e38/">E38 7 Series</a> in 1997, as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/7-series/e38/l7/">E38 BMW L7</a>.
