The Ford Tempo and its brother, the Mercury Topaz, were sold domestically and abroad from 1984 to 1994. The Tempo was considered a compact car and shared the radical forward-thinking design championed by the Taurus. Two and four-door body styles were available. The Tempo was equipped with a 2.3L inline four-cylinder HSC (High Swirl Combustion) engine or a diesel engine produced by Mazda. Depending on the model year, buyers had three gearbox options: a 3-speed automatic, a 4-speed automatic, and a 5-speed manual transmission. The cars were FWD, but customers had the option of AWD from 1987 to 1991. In 1988 (Second Generation), the Tempo had a mild redesign in and out. The Tempo and Topaz were available in 5 to 6 trim levels throughout its history. Ford managed to sell almost three million Tempos and Topaz’ but still lost money on the endeavor. The Tempo was succeeded by the Ford Contour and the Mercury Mystique.
