The Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG was a performance focused variant of the W463 G-Class that was introduced in 2000. The G 55 was the first AMG offering after AMG had been acquired by Mercedes-Benz. These cars were released globally in 2000, but only made it to the North American market officially for the 2002 model year. Initially, the G55 AMG was available in short and long wheelbase versions, and was fitted with Mercedes' M113 E55 engine, which was a 5.4L naturally aspired V8 that generated 354hp and 387 lb ft of torque. From the 2005 model year onward, the G55 was given a supercharged version of the M113 E55 that is commonly referred to as the M113K (K for Kompressor), and only offered in long wheelbase versions. While the M113K was used for the remainder of the G55's production run, this engine was given regular updates which saw power increase from 469hp when launched, to 500hp at the end of production, with torque remaining constant at 516 lb ft. Production of the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG lasted until 2012, when it was replaced by the W463 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG.
