The first evolution of the Third Generation Ford Mustang was introduced for the 1979 model year. This initial version of the "Fox Body" Third Generation Mustang is commonly referred to as the "Quad-headlight" due to its distinctive four headlight design. These cars were offered in a Hatchback body style (a/k/a fastback or liftback), Convertibles, and a small number as T-Top's (all of which featured a hatchback) or Coupes (a/k/a notchback). Quad-headlight Mustang's featured a range of engine options including inline four, inline six, V6, and V8 powerplants, paired with manual or automatic transmissions, with both options sending drive to the rear wheels. A wide range of variants were built, including the notable LX, GT, Indy Pace Car, SSP, and SVO. Production of the "Quad-headlight" Fox Body Mustang ended in 1986, when Ford updated the model and introduced the 1987-1993 Third Generation Ford Mustang.
