The W461 generation of Mercedes-Benz G was introduced in 1992. With the introduction of the updated W463 Generation, Mercedes pushed the G upmarket with greater luxury and dynamics, yet there was still a need for more utilitarian, work-focused vehicles. This need was fulfilled by the creation of the W461, which combined the newer powertrains offered on the W463, but with the chassis and bodies of the W460. Vehicles from the W461 were used by the military, public works, and agriculture among others. Notable variants built included the 230GE/G230, 250GD, G280 CDI, G300 CDI, 290GD, and G290GD T.
