BMW introduced the 540i variant of their E34 5 Series in 1992. Powered by a 4.0L V8 engine, the 540i was one of the highest end variants of the E34. Due to the end of M5 sales in non-European markets in 1993, a special North American variant, the 540i M-Sport was introduced in 1995. This M-Sport model featured enhancements to the suspension, brakes and steering, but saw no changes to the engine. The 540i would continue life in the next generation of 5 Series, as the E39 540i.
