The 525d was a diesel powered variant of the BMW E39 5 Series. Introduced in 2000, the 525d was powered by BMW's M57D25 engine. This 2.5L turbocharged inline six diesel engine produced 161hp in European spec and was offered with manual or automatic transmissions. Both sedan and touring (station wagon) body styles were offered for the 525d, which was in production until 2003. BMW would continue the model series in the next generation BMW E60 5 Series.
