BMW introduced the 525i in 1981 as a variant of the BMW E28 5 Series. The 525i was powered by BMW's M30B25 engine. This fuel injected 2.5L inline six unit generated 148hp, and sent its power through manual or automatic transmissions to the rear wheels. The E28 525i was only offered as a sedan, and was built until 1987. The 525i would be reborn in the next generation as the BMW E34 525i.
