The 528i was a variant of the BMW E39 5 Series that was introduced for 1997. The E39 528i was powered by BMW's M52B28 inline six engine and was offered with manual or automatic transmission options. This engine was updated in 1998 with new engine management, which saw its name change to M52TUB28, and although power figures remained the same, this updated engine featured a much wider and lower powerband. These rear wheel drive cars were available in sedan or touring (station wagon) body styles, and were produced until 2001. BMW would reintroduce the 528i in the next generation of 5 Series as the E60 528i.
