The 2005 to 2010 Fifth Generation Ford Mustang was the first evolution of the S-197 coded platform. Featuring retro-inspired modern styling, which drew heavily from the First Generation Mustang, many special editions were offered in addition to the GT, the GT/California Special, Shelby Mustang, Bullitt Mustang, and popular versions were modified by Roush and Saleen. Ford also provided a range of factory-built race cars known collectively as the Ford Performance Race Cars. Bodies could be configured in a convertible or coupe, and the interior also received retro styling. The rear suspension continued to feature a cost-saving live rear axle. A 4.0L V6 and two V8s sent power to the rear wheels through a five or six-speed manual and a five-speed automatic. The S-197 I Ford Mustang production lasted until 2009 when the 5th Gen Mustang was updated to the S-197 II Ford Mustang.
