The successor to the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/new-class/">New Class</a> sedans, the 5 Series is a range of luxury executive cars that have been built mostly as sedans, but also as wagons and fastbacks. The second generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/">BMW 5 Series</a>, known as the E28, was introduced in 1981. The E28 was available with inline 4 or inline 6 engines, and was the first BMW car to be offered with a diesel engine. The second generation 5 Series also introduced the now legendary <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e28/m5/">BMW M5</a> in 1985. The 528e, which was known as the 525e in Europe, was powered by BMW&#39;s M20B27 engine. This engine was designed for efficiency (thus the &#39;e&#39; in 528e) and emphasized low end torque. It displaced 2.7L and generated 123hp (121hp with catalytic converter). For the last few years of production the M20B27 received upgraded fuel injection resulting inpower increasing to 127hp. This series of cars were offered as rear wheel drive sedans, and were available with manual or automatic transmissions. The 528e was produced until 1988, when BMW discontinued the model series.

This new series of cars were variants of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e28/">E28 5 Series</a> that were created for the North American market. As BMW did not import the M535i to North America, they created the 535is, which was largely similar to the E28 535i, but it was fitted with front and rear spoilers, as well as sports suspension, but featured the same M30B34 inline six engine as in the 535i. In 1985, BMW unveiled the E28 M535i. This second iteration of the M535i was the highest spec model built on the standard <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e28/">E28 5 Series</a> production line, and featured unique bodywork and panelling. Powered by a 3.4L straight six engine, the M535i was one of the top E28 variants alongside its bigger brother, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e28/m5/">E28 M5</a>. The M535i was not sold in North America, although it is common to find imported versions.

The first BMW M5 was introduced in 1985. Based on the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e28/">E28 5 Series</a>, the M5 featured various mechanical improvements to the drivetrain, as well as being fitted with a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/m1/">BMW M1</a> derived engine. When the M5 was launched, it was the world&#39;s fastest production sedan. While all E28 M5 cars were fitted with a 3.5L straight six, North American cars were fitted with catalytic converters that reduced power to 256hp from the European model&#39;s 282hp. Built until 1988, the E28 M5 was replaced by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/m5/">E34 M5</a> for 1989. At the end of production only 2,241 examples of the original M5 had been produced.
