BMW introduced the 5 Series in 1972. The successor to the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/new-class/">New Class</a> sedans, the 5 Series is a range of luxury executive cars that have been built mostly as sedans, but also as wagons and fastbacks. The third generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/">BMW 5 Series</a> was introduced in 1988. Known as the E34, this new generation of 5 Series was available as a sedan or a station wagon. The E34 was offered with a variety of engines, including inline 4, inline 6, and V8, as well as a diesel option. The E34 was the first 5 Series generation to offer four wheel drive as an available option. E34 5 Series variants include the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/540i/">540i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/535i/">535i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/530i/">530i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/525i/">525i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/525tds/">525tds</a>, and the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/520i/">520i</a>, as well as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/m5/">M5</a>. BMW introduced the 520i variant of their <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/">E34 5 Series</a> for the 1988 model year. Over the course of production, BMW used three different engines to power the E34 520i. At first, it was fitted with BMW&#39;s 127hp M20B20 inline six engine, but from 1990, they used their 148hp M50B20 inline six unit. This engine was used until BMW introduced their M50B20TU for 1993, which was the featured variable valve timing, and an improved powerband. Both manual and automatic transmissions were offered for this series of rear wheel drive cars, as well as sedan or touring wagon body styles. Production of the E34 520i ended in 1996, but the 520i would continue life in the next generation of 5 Series, as the E39 520i.

BMW M5 - E34

BMW introduced their <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/">E34 5 Series</a> based M5 in 1989. The E34 M5 was powered by BMW&#39;s S38 3.5L inline 6 engine, but starting in 1992, European models received a larger, more powerful version of the S38. The E34 M5 was also the first generation of M5 to feature a station wagon variant, although it was built in limited numbers, with less than 900 produced. In 1993, non-European markets stopped receiving the M5, but in Europe, the M5 was offered until 1995. At the end of its production, the E34 M5 was replaced by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e39/m5/">E39 M5</a> starting in 1999.

This new series of cars were variants of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_5_Series_(E34)">E34 5 Series</a>, and were powered by BMW&#39;s M51D25 engine. This intercooled 2.5L inline six turbodiesel engine produced 140hp, and sent its power to the rear wheels through manual or automatic transmission options. The 525tds was only available as a rear wheel drive sedan, and was built until 1996, although the model series continued life in the next generation <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/">E34 BMW 5 Series</a>.

BMW 540i - E34

BMW introduced the 540i variant of their <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e34/">E34 5 Series</a> in 1992. Powered by a 4.0L V8 engine, the 540i was one of the highest end variants of the E34. Due to the end of M5 sales in non-European markets in 1993, a special North American variant, the 540i M-Sport was introduced in 1995. This M-Sport model featured enhancements to the suspension, brakes and steering, but saw no changes to the engine. The 540i would continue life in the next generation of 5 Series, as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e39/540i/">E39 540i</a>.
