Known as the E39, the fourth generation 5 Series was offered as a sedan or a station wagon. The E39 was offered with inline 6 and V8 gasoline engines, as well as inline 4 and inline 6 diesel engines, although no all wheel drive variant was produced. The E39 528i was powered by BMW&#39;s M52B28 inline six engine and was offered with manual or automatic transmission options. This engine was updated in 1998 with new engine management, which saw its name change to M52TUB28, and although power figures remained the same, this updated engine featured a much wider and lower powerband. These rear wheel drive cars were available in sedan or touring (station wagon) body styles, and were produced until 2001. BMW would reintroduce the 528i in the next generation of 5 Series as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e60/528i/">E60 528i</a>.

Both manual and automatic transmissions were offered for this series of rear wheel drive cars, as well as sedan or touring wagon body styles. Production of the E39 535i ended in 2003, but the 535i would continue life in the next generation of 5 Series, as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e60/535i/">E60 535i</a>.

One of the top of the line variants for the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e39/">E39 5 Series</a> was the BMW 540i. Introduced in 1996, the 540i was initially fitted with BMW&#39;s M62B44 engine. This 4.4L V8 engine produced 282hp and sent power to the rear wheels through manual or automatic transmissions. For the 1999 model year, this engine was updated. Now known as the M62TUB44, this updated engine featured a wider and lower powerband than its predecessor. Production of the E39 540i ended in 2003, although BMW continued the model series in its next generation <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/5-series/e60/">E60 5 Series</a>.
