Mercedes-Benz introduced their W124 based coupes for the 1988 model year. Known as the C124 Coupes, these cars were not officially known as an E-Class until 1993, when Mercedes changed their model naming system and moved the E to the beginning of the model name. The C124 was available with either an inline four, an inline six, or a V8 engine and was built in a range of variants including the 230CE, 300CE, 300CE-24, E220, and the E320. A handful of AMG C124 offerings were also built. At the end of production of the C124 coupe, Mercedes changed the name of E-Class based coupes to the Mercedes-Benz CLK.
