The 318is was a coupe variant of the E36 BMW 3 Series that debuted for the 1992 model year. Initially powered by the 1.8L M42 four cylinder, in 1993 it was replaced by the M44 1.8-liter four cylinder. These engines were both rated at 136hp, but the M44 had slightly more torque, and an improved powerband. These engines were both paired to a 5 speed manual transmission that sent drive to the rear wheels. Production of the E36 BMW 318is ended in 1998.
