In 1986, BMW introduced the original M3 as a 1987 model. Since then, the M3 has grown into one of the world's well known performance cars, built over 6 generations. Of all of the generations of M3 cars that have come after the E30 M3, none have matched the reverence and love the original M3 has fostered. Fitted with BMW's S14 inline 4 engine, the M3 featured an improved drivetrain as well as a wider track width. Not only mechanically different from the standard model, the E30 M3 featured vastly restyled panels and bumpers, with only a few panels being shared with the standard car. The E30 M3 was mostly available in a Coupe body style, although a rare Convertible version was also built. The most notable variants were the highly regarded Evolution II and Sport Evolution versions, but other special editions such as the Evolution I, Johnny Cecotto Edition and Europameister were built. The E30 M3 was built until 1991 and was replaced by the E36 M3 in 1992.
