The successor to the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/02-series/">BMW 02 Series</a>, the BMW 3 Series is a series of compact luxury cars that have been produced in an array of body styles including sedan, coupe, wagon, and convertible. The first generation of the BMW 3 Series is known as the E21. Introduced in 1975, the E21 was the first in a long line of compact luxury cars. Although the large majority of variants such as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/320i/">320i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/316/">316</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/320is/">320is</a>, and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/315/">315</a> were powered by inline 4 engines, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/3206/">320/6</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/323i/">323i</a> variants were fitted with a straight six engine. This 2.3L inline six engine generated 141hp sent to the rear wheels via four or five speed manual transmissions. BMW 320i - E21

The 320i was a variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/">E21 BMW 3 Series</a> that was introduced in 1975. This series of sedans were powered by BMW&#39;s M64 engine, sending power to the rear wheels via a manual transmission. The 320i&#39;s 2.0L inline four engine featured fuel-injection, and generated 123hp. US-market examples were initially fitted with a less powerful version of the M64 engine which generated 109hp, but in 1980, the engine was downsized to 1.8L, with a power rating of 99hp. Although BMW produced the 320i as a sedan, coachbuilder Baur offered a convertible conversion that featured a factory warranty. Production of the E21 320i lasted until 1983, although the model series would continue life in the next generation of 3 Series as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e30/320i/">E30 BMW 320i</a>.

This series of cars were offered as four door sedans, and were equipped with BMW&#39;s M41 1.6L carbureted inline four engine sending 89hp through a four speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. The 316 was BMW&#39;s 3 Series base model during its production, which ended in 1981. The 316 was replaced by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/315/">E21 BMW 315</a>.

BMW 320is - E21

The 320is was a variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/">E21 BMW 3 Series</a> that was introduced for the 1980 model year. The 320is was largely a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/3-series/e21/320i/">320i</a>, but equipped with the sport package. The sport package included a front air dam, Recaro seats, and a bespoke leather steering wheel, but most importantly, it included upgraded suspension and a limited-slip differential alongside front and rear roll bars. Notably, the 320is was equipped with the same 2.0L inline four engine as available on the 320i. This 123hp engine was paired a five speed manual transmission sending drive to the rear wheels. Production of the BMW 320is ended in 1983.
